A few weeks ago, one of our neighbors told us a story that made us laugh.
A friend she hadn’t spoken to in a while had said to her,
“So…I heard you moved into a home.”
She paused for a second before realizing what they meant.
Then she laughed.
“No,” she said. “It’s a neighborhood.”
It’s funny how persistent this misconception about Ocean Hills Country Club can be.
And what made the whole thing even funnier is the neighbor telling us the story is an active woman in her mid-50s.
That said, I get it. I can see where the misconception comes from and it’s part of why we started Ocean Hills Living.
If you’ve never been to Ocean Hills Country Club, it’s easy to picture something very different from what life here is actually like.
In fact, I think one of the biggest misconceptions people have about Ocean Hills Country Club is that it’s the kind of place you move to when you’re “old.”
We hear it all the time.
“I’m too young for that.”
“Maybe in another ten years.”
“We’re not quite ready.”
The funny thing is…most of the people saying those words are already old enough to live here.
The Picture Most People Have
I think many people imagine a quiet retirement community where life slows down.
Maybe people sitting around. Not much happening. Almost like an independent living community.
Ocean Hills Country Club isn’t that.
It’s also important to understand that it isn’t assisted living or an independent living community. There aren’t care services provided through the HOA. It’s simply a neighborhood for people who are 55 and older.
A neighborhood filled with people who still have places to go, friends to meet, hobbies to pursue, and entirely new adventures ahead of them.
What We Actually See
On any given morning, you’ll find people walking the loop before the sun gets too warm.
Some are in their late fifties. Some are in their eighties. A few are even older.
One of the things I admire most about this community isn’t how young everyone looks. It’s how engaged everyone is.
You’ll see neighbors heading to pickleball, the fitness center, golf, bocce, book clubs, volunteer activities, theater rehearsals, card games, or simply meeting friends for a walk.
A few weeks ago, neighbors called us on a Thursday morning because they had two extra tickets to that night’s Padres game.
By 4:30 that afternoon, we were riding downtown together.
That kind of spontaneous invitation happens here more often than you might think.
Life doesn’t slow down.
It simply becomes filled with different things.
The Reason Ocean Hills Living Exists
When TK and I decided to move to Ocean Hills Country Club and build our real estate business here, we did exactly what most buyers do.
We Googled it.
And honestly…
The picture we found online didn’t look anything like the community we’d experienced for years through my parents.
The websites were dated.
The photos were dated.
There was very little social media presence.
If you had never visited, it would have been easy to assume all of the stereotypes were true.
The information wasn’t necessarily wrong. It just wasn’t telling the whole story.
That’s one of the biggest reasons we created Ocean Hills Living. We wanted people to see what life here actually feels like—from people who live it every day.
Maybe We’ve Been Looking at It Backwards
One thing I’ve noticed since moving here is that people often point out how many residents are in their eighties and nineties.
I don’t see that as a negative. I see it as something worth celebrating.
When I see someone in their nineties out walking the loop, I don’t think,
“They’re old.”
I think,
“I hope that’s me someday.”
Still moving.
Still connected.
Still part of a community.
Still living life.
Maybe one of the reasons so many people continue living active lives here into their later years isn’t because they happened to move to Ocean Hills Country Club.
Maybe it’s because they never stopped living once they got here.
So…Am I Too Young?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
I don’t think age is actually the right question.
A better question might be this:
Are you ready for a lifestyle that’s built around community, friendships, activity, and a little more spontaneity?
Because that’s what we’ve found here.
Ocean Hills Country Club isn’t an old folks home. It’s a neighborhood.
And if we’re lucky…
It’s the kind of neighborhood where we’ll still be out walking the loop years from now.
Because we believe this chapter of life deserves a better story than the stereotypes we’ve all heard. And that’s the story we’ve been trying to tell ever since we started Ocean Hills Living.
