Why Life in Ocean Hills Country Club Feels Like Being a Kid Again

One of our very first pickleball coaches here in Ocean Hills Country Club said something we’ve never forgotten.

With a smile, he looked around at the courts and said,

“Ocean Hills Country Club is like summer camp for unsupervised adults.”

We laughed. Because it really does feel that way.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve heard countless residents say the exact same thing. Every time we do, we smile again. Because once you’ve lived here for a while, you understand exactly what they mean.

At first glance, it might sound like they’re talking about all the activities. The pickleball. The golf. The bocce. The clubs. The happy hours. The concerts. The bike rides. The interest groups.

But the more we thought about it, the more we realized…

Summer camp was never really about the activities. It was about how they made you feel.

It Was Freedom

Remember waking up at summer camp?

You didn’t wake up wondering what you had to do that day.

You woke up wondering…“What are we going to do today?”

There was a sense of possibility. Adventure. Curiosity.

You spent more time outside. You laughed more. You tried things you’d never done before.

Life felt just a little lighter.

Somewhere along the way, adulthood replaced that feeling with calendars, commitments, responsibilities, and schedules planned weeks in advance.

Then something unexpected happens when you move to Ocean Hills Country Club.

Some of that freedom quietly returns.

Someone Is Always Looking for One More

One of the things we love most about living here is how often someone asks…

“Want to play pickleball?”

“We’re taking a walk this morning.”

“A few of us are heading to happy hour.”

“Come join us for bocce.”

“We’re trying a new restaurant.”

“Want to come?”

It’s the grown-up version of knocking on your cabin door at summer camp.

There always seemed to be room for one more. One more player. One more team member. One more seat. One more activity.

And around here, there always room for one more. (Well, unless it’s a totally sold out event, which happens a lot around here, too!)

You Rediscover Things You Didn’t Know You Missed

When we first moved here, we thought we’d simply be moving into a beautiful community surrounded by great people.

What we didn’t expect was to rediscover things that had quietly slipped away over the years.

Spontaneity. Curiosity. Play. Friendship.

Not because those things disappeared. Life simply became busy. There were careers to build. Families to raise. Parents to care for. Deadlines to meet. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, we stopped saying “yes” quite as often.

Life in Ocean Hills Country Club has a gentle way of changing that.

More Than Activities

People often ask us about the amenities. Yes, there are more than 40 clubs and groups.

Yes, there’s golf, pickleball, bocce, fitness classes, art studios, social clubs, and countless ways to stay active.

Those things matter. But they’re not the reason this place feels different. The activities simply create opportunities.

The real magic is what happens because of them.

Friendships are formed. Conversations happen. Neighbors become friends. Someone invites you to lunch. Someone encourages you to try something new.

Someone asks…“Want to come?”

Maybe That’s Why It Feels Like Summer Camp

Summer camp wasn’t memorable because of what we did. It was memorable because of how it made us feel.

Free. Curious. Adventurous. Connected.

Maybe that’s why so many people smile when they describe Ocean Hills Country Club as “summer camp for unsupervised adults.”

Not because we’re trying to relive childhood. Because we’re rediscovering the parts of it that were always worth keeping.

Friendship. Freedom. Wonder. Play.

And the simple joy of waking up excited about the day ahead.
