One of the unexpected joys of living in Ocean Hills Country Club isn’t the golf course, the clubhouse, or even the beautiful Southern California weather.

It’s something much simpler.

It feels a little like being a kid again.

Do you remember those long summer afternoons when someone would knock on your front door and ask, “Want to come out and play?”

No calendars.

No group texts.

No planning weeks in advance.

Just the simple joy of doing something together.

Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped playing.

Life became about responsibilities—building careers, raising families, caring for parents, paying mortgages, and checking one more thing off an endless to-do list.

Play quietly disappeared.

Not because we didn’t want it.

Because we simply forgot to make room for it.

Then something unexpected happens when people move to Ocean Hills Country Club.

Play finds its way back into everyday life.

We Don’t Always Call It Play

We call it pickleball.

Golf.

Bocce.

A bike ride with friends.

An art class.

Morning coffee.

A cooking demonstration.

A neighborhood walk.

A spontaneous invitation to happy hour.

On the surface, these are just activities. But underneath them is something much deeper.

They’re opportunities to laugh.

To move.

To learn.

To connect.

To remember what simply feels good.

Recently, while listening to Dr. Kelly Starrett on the Rich Roll Podcast, he talked about something that really resonated with me—that play isn’t something we outgrow. It’s something we need throughout our lives. It keeps us moving, curious, connected, and engaged with the world around us.

That idea stayed with me because I realized play isn’t just something we did as children. It’s something many of us quietly miss as adults. And, it’s part of living a healthy life and aging well.

What Does Play Look Like for You?

Play looks different for everyone.

Maybe play is riding your bike through the neighborhood. Or walking the beach at sunrise. Maybe it’s learning watercolor, tending a garden, traveling, playing cards with friends, cooking a new recipe, or finally picking up that hobby you’ve always wanted to try.

There isn’t a right answer.

Play is simply whatever brings you joy and makes you lose track of time.

For many of us, the challenge isn’t finding something to do.

It’s remembering what we loved before life became so busy.

The Grown-Up Version of “Want to Play?”

One of my favorite things about life in Ocean Hills Country Club is how often someone says…

“A few of us are heading out for a walk.”

“Want to play pickleball?”

“Come join us for bocce tonight.”

“We’re trying a new restaurant.”

“Would you like to come to our cooking group?”

It’s the grown-up version of knocking on your neighbor’s door and asking…

“Want to come out and play?”

And almost always…Someone says yes.

That simple willingness to say yes—to movement, to friendship, to trying something new—is one of the things that makes this community feel so alive.

More Than Amenities

When people first begin exploring Ocean Hills Country Club, they usually ask about the homes, the floor plans, the HOA, or the amenities.

Those are important questions.

But I sometimes think there’s a better one.

What would you do if you had more time… and more people to do it with?

With more than 40 clubs and activities, it’s easy to discover something you’ve always wanted to try—or rediscover something you haven’t done in years.

Whether it’s golf, bocce, pickleball, art, gardening, or joining a group like our Plant-Based Food & Friends club, this community has a way of reminding you that life isn’t just about staying busy.

It’s about staying engaged.

Maybe That’s the Real Gift

People often ask us what it really feels like to live in Ocean Hills Country Club.

Yes, it’s beautiful.

Yes, the homes are lovely.

Yes, there are wonderful amenities.

But those aren’t the reason it feels special.

The real gift is that life becomes just a little lighter and more connected.

You laugh more.

You move more.

You try new things.

You make new friends.

You rediscover simple joys.

You remember parts of yourself that may have been waiting patiently all along.

Maybe that’s what retirement was always meant to be.

Not slowing down.

Just making room for more of what makes you feel alive.
