One of the questions we often hear from prospective buyers is:

“Is there a restaurant inside Ocean Hills Country Club?”

Residents enjoying Taco Tuesday and community events at Ocean Hills Country Club in Oceanside, California.

The answer? “No.”

There’s usually a brief pause. Sometimes even a look of disappointment, which we completely understand.

When comparing 55+ communities or country club communities, it sounds like something a community like this one should have.

After all, wouldn’t it be convenient to simply hop in the golf cart and grab dinner?

Maybe? But after living here…we are so grateful that we don’t have a restaurant. And, we hear the same thing from other residents.

In fact, we were recently giving a community tour when another resident jumped in to introduce herself and share how much she loves living in OHCC. She said, “You know what I love MOST? There is NO restaurant.”

What We Thought We Wanted

When people imagine an on-site restaurant, they’re usually imagining convenience. A place to meet friends. A casual dinner without leaving the neighborhood. A clubhouse that feels like the center of community life.

Those are all good things. But after talking with many people who have lived in other 55+ communities, we’ve heard a very different story.

Restaurants are expensive to operate. Many communities end up subsidizing them through HOA dues.

People eventually grow tired of the menu. The same restaurant. The same food. The same complaints.

Before long, what once sounded like a great amenity becomes one of the community’s biggest frustrations.

We Live in One of the Best Restaurant Cities Around

Here’s something else that often gets overlooked.

Ocean Hills Country Club isn’t tucked away in the middle of nowhere. We’re surrounded by countless restaurants.

Within just a few miles, you can find everything from cozy neighborhood cafés and breakfast spots to waterfront seafood, authentic Mexican food, Italian restaurants, sushi, breweries, and just about anything else you’re craving.

And thanks to Southern California’s beautiful weather, getting in the car for a short drive is hardly a chore.

In fact…Sometimes choosing where to go is the hardest part.

But Here’s What Surprised Us

This is the part we never expected.

Social life here in OHCC doesn’t revolve around a restaurant and food. It revolves around people and activities.

Instead of everyone gathering in the same dining room every Friday night, the community creates countless opportunities to connect in different ways.

  • Taco Tuesdays.
  • Food trucks.
  • Burger & Brews.
  • Concerts on the Greens.
  • Club events.
  • Neighborhood happy hours.
  • Catered events.
  • Holiday celebrations.
  • Plant-Based Food & Friends.
  • A quick game of bocce that turns into dinner afterward.
  • A spontaneous invitation to meet friends after pickleball.

The connections happen everywhere. Not because there’s one place to gather… But because there are so many reasons to.

The Convenience People Are Really Looking For

We’ve learned that when buyers ask about a restaurant, they’re usually not asking about the food.

They’re asking about convenience. They’re asking whether it’ll be easy to meet people. Whether they’ll have somewhere to gather. Whether life will feel connected and easy.

In our experience…it absolutely does. Just not in the way most people expect.

Looking Ahead

If Ocean Hills Country Club had a restaurant, I’m sure we’d eat there once in a while. But I honestly don’t think we’d trade what we have now.

  • Lower HOA costs.
  • An incredible variety of nearby restaurants.
  • And a community where social life isn’t centered around one venue.

It’s woven throughout the entire neighborhood.

So when people ask us whether Ocean Hills Country Club has a restaurant…

We smile.

Because we’ve learned the better question isn’t:

“Where do people eat?”

It’s:

“Where do people connect?”

And after living here ourselves, we think that’s one of the things Ocean Hills Country Club gets exactly right.
