When you step inside the gates of OHCC, you quickly realize it’s a lot bigger than you thought.

With 1632 homes, it’s a pretty sizable neighborhood. But, on nearly every tour we give, I find myself saying the same thing:

Ocean Hills Country Club is the perfect size.

Remember Goldilocks and the Three Bears? Too hot. Too cold. And “Just Right”?

For us, that’s how it feels here…just the right size.

Big Enough That There Is Always Someone New to Meet

Step outside. Take a walk. Go to the gym. Sign up for an activity or attend an event. Chances are, you’ll meet someone you haven’t met before.

Even after living here for a while, that hasn’t changed. Every time we attend an event, we meet someone we have never met. There are always new conversations to have, new people to discover and new connections waiting to be made.

That size also allows for an incredible variety of interests and activities. I remember when we started our “Plant-based Food & Friends” group that quickly grew from a handful of people to over 100. Whatever your interest, you will find people here who are interested in exploring it with you.

It’s also big enough that there can be a major event happening somewhere in the community and you won’t even know about it—simply because it falls outside your particular circle or interests.

That might sound strange, but it’s actually one of the things I appreciate most. You don’t have to participate in everything to feel as though you belong here. Enough is happening that everyone can build a version of community life that feels natural to them.

Small Enough That You Rarely Feel Anonymous

At the same time, it is almost impossible to go out without seeing someone you know.

You might pass a neighbor while walking, recognize someone from an exercise class at the Clubhouse or run into friends while picking up dinner from a food pop-up. There is nearly always a familiar face somewhere.

That combination is what makes OHCC feel so unusual:

It is big enough that you can always meet someone new, yet small enough that you nearly always see someone you know.

It never gets old. And it makes the community feel like home.

Room for More Than One Circle of Friends

Another benefit of a community this size is that friendships tend to form in different circles.

We have friends we know through golf, friends from bocce, neighbors, couples we meet for happy hour and people we have connected with through other activities. Those groups sometimes overlap, but they don’t have to.

When something comes up that we would like to attend, we can send a text to a few different groups and usually find someone who wants to join us. There is a wonderful freedom in having different friendships built around different interests and parts of life.

You aren’t limited to one social group, and there is no single “right” way to fit in. You can find your people—and more than one version of your people.

Close to Family, While Still Having Lives of Our Own

We experience this in a particularly meaningful way because our parents also live in Ocean Hills Country Club.

They have lived here for many years and have their own established friendships. We have gotten to know many of their friends, and there is some lovely crossover between our social worlds. But we have also developed circles of our own.

My parents and their friends are largely in their 80s and 90s, while many of our friends are in their 50s and 60s. We can live in the same neighborhood, share experiences and see one another easily without feeling as though we are living the exact same life.

That balance is pretty special. OHCC is large enough to give each generation independence, but connected enough to create meaningful overlap.

A Community That Can Grow With You

What feels “just right” will be different for everyone. Some people want a quiet life with a few close neighbors. Others want a calendar filled with clubs, classes, sports and social events. Many people want a little of both.

Ocean Hills Country Club makes room for all of those possibilities.

You can participate constantly or selectively. You can maintain several different social circles or keep your world small. You can continue meeting new people while still feeling recognized and known.

For us, that is the magic of its size. OHCC offers enough variety to keep life interesting, enough space to create a life of your own and enough familiarity to feel that you truly belong.

It is large—but it doesn’t feel anonymous. It is close-knit—but it doesn’t feel limiting. It feels just right.
